Sistemul de l-număr , numele de „numărul“ înseamnă „numărul“ englezesc este un sistem de clasificare semi-științific utilizat pentru a denumi speciile de familia de Loricariidae (ventuza somn). Se bazează pe fotografii ale peștilor tropicali publicate de revista acvaristică DATZ (Die Aquarien und TerrarienZeitschrift).
Cele L numere au fost stabilite inițial de germană revista acvarist Datz (Die Aquarien und TerrarienZeitschrift), litera L , inițial de „Loricariidae“, fiind urmat de un număr, care corespunde ordinului de import.
Un număr L nu este un nume științific oficial, dar face posibilă identificarea și distincția diferitelor Siluriformes printr-un fel de „ nume vernacular ”, chiar dacă specia în cauză nu a fost încă descrisă științific. Această practică devine obișnuită, deoarece importurile de loricariide din America de Sud sunt adesea exemplare care nu au fost încă descrise. În prezent, numerele L sunt utilizate nu numai de către amatori, ci și de biologi, deoarece acest sistem reprezintă un bun punct de oprire pentru o nouă specie de pești în absența unui nume taxonomic valid.
Animalele comercializate inițial sub numere L au putut ulterior să facă obiectul unei descrieri științifice, pentru unii, și astfel să primească o nomenclatură binomială validă. Această nouă nomenclatură le poate defini ca o nouă specie sau chiar le poate asocia cu o specie deja cunoscută, din care constituie astfel un nou ecotip . Adesea, însă , numărul L este păstrat în scopuri comerciale sau pentru a defini ecotipul. In prezent, mai mult de 600 de specii și forme de Loricariidae sunt cunoscute, caracterizate prin lor L-număr .
Când Loricariidul primește un nume științific oficial, numărul L este eliminat.
În general, un anumit număr L nu garantează existența reală a unei anumite specii. Astfel, s - au găsit numere L diferite care denotă populații diferite din aceeași specie. Pentru a adăuga confuzia, uneori același număr L se poate referi de fapt la mai multe specii distincte.
